The Health Occupations Aptitude Examination is also known as PSB Test, HOAE Test, Health Occupations Aptitude Exam, HOAE PSB test, PSB HOAE, and PSB health occupations aptitude examination. Therefore, if you are told to take a test with any of the names above, know that they are all referring to the same test. It is essential to prepare for the HOAE test as you have to pass it in order to be accepted to the healthcare program in which you wish to study.

The PSB HOAE Test is a 2-hour and 15-minute test with 305 questions. It comprises five parts—academic aptitude, spelling, reading comprehension, information in the natural sciences, and vocational adjustment index (psychological assessment). The fee may be different depending on the program. The range is around $25-60. Usually, the test takes place by appointment at the college to which you are applying. During the Covid-19 pandemic, at-home remote testing is possible via a proctored online setting with Pearson Vue, sometimes for an additional fee. ### Did you know? The PSB Test has five sections: (1) academic aptitude, (2) spelling, (3) reading comprehension, (4) information in the natural sciences, and (5) vocational adjustment index. Scores are ranked by percentile, with top performers being selected for the health occupation program. To excel on the test, you will need to read through the instructions carefully and work quickly. This Health Occupations Aptitude Exam predicts your ability to complete the healthcare program which prepares qualified healthcare personnel. It is a standardized pre-admission test required for application to various nursing schools and healthcare programs in colleges and universities, including Practical Nursing (PPNSG), Cardiovascular Technology, Dental Hygiene, Pharmacy Technician (PPHTN), and Veterinary Technician (PVETT). In addition to passing the HOAE test, you may be required to meet additional admission requirements, specific to each program. Free HOAE Practice PSB HOAE Navigation Pad ## PSB HOAE Question Types Explained The PSB HOAE Test is divided into five parts. Each part measures an ability/characteristic that is needed for your success in your chosen healthcare program. The total time limit is 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the test is divided into five parts: #### Part 1 – Academic Aptitude This section tests your ability to learn and recall information. It is correlated with, thus predicting, academic success. The subsections consist of the following three types of questions—verbal questions, arithmetic questions, and non-verbal questions. #### Verbal Subtest Question Format/Instructions This aspect consists of vocabulary-related test questions. You will be presented with five words. Four share some similarity in their meaning and one is different. You need to decide which word is most different in meaning from the other words. Winning Tip for Verbal Questions The similarity of the words may be based on many aspects but the most common case is that the words are actually synonyms. The different word, however, doesn’t have to have the opposite meaning. It may represent a higher/lower level of a quality, or have an outstanding characteristic that differentiates it from the rest of the words. In some cases, the odd word may not be related at all to the other words. Usually in these cases, the odd word is spelled or pronounced similarly to another word (homonym), which may be related to the other words. Try It Yourself – Verbal Sample Question #### Arithmetic Subtest Question Format/Instructions This section assesses your skills on various mathematical concepts and computational speed. The questions are short word problems, and you must choose the correct answer among five answers. To succeed, you must sharpen your skills of solving questions that involve the four basic operations: fractions, decimals, percents, and practical unit conversion. Winning Tip for Arithmetic Questions Elimination is one of the most important principles in solving multiple-choice problems. You should always remember that in order to find the correct answer you do not necessarily have to solve the problem through and through. If you find sufficient evidence to eliminate all options but one, this last option must be the correct answer, and you can mark it as the correct answer and move on. Try It Yourself – Arithmetic Sample Question #### Non-Verbal Subtest Question Format/Instructions These questions measure your skills in mental manipulation and relationship recognition. You will be presented with a pair of shapes and a third shape. Your goal is to figure out the relationship between the first pair of shapes and find a shape within the five answers that creates the same relationship with the third shape. Winning Tip for Non-Verbal Questions Keep in mind that you must always base the analogy on the relationship between the first pair of shapes; never base it on a plausible relationship between the first shape of the first pair of shapes and the third given shape. Try It Yourself – Non-Verbal Sample Question #### Part 2 – Spelling This section tests you on your ability to spell accurately. It requires you to spell terms that reflect your educational background and communication skills. You will be presented with a few spelling variations and you are required to mark the correct spelling. The correct answer is always one of the options. #### Try a Spelling Sample Question Winning Tip for Spelling Questions People tend to believe that spelling is a skill you are either good at or not. However, spelling is definitely a skill you can improve, and, moreover, if your goal is to remember it specifically for the test, and then “let go” and forget. Work hard on remembering the exceptions to the common spelling rules. These words are often used on tests and familiarizing yourself with them will prove to be an advantage on test day. #### Part 3 – Reading Comprehension This section assesses your ability to read, understand, and interpret written material. To answer the questions, you will extract the information from the passage and grasp the main idea of authors along with observing the main organization of ideas. #### Try a Reading Comprehension Sample Question Winning Tip for Reading Comprehension Questions Choose the Best Answer. Read the directions and questions carefully. Remember that you will often have a choice of four or five answers, at least two of which may appear plausible or partially correct. You are, in most instances, required to select the best answer, not merely an answer which is “acceptable.” The purpose behind such a question is to test your judgment, your ability to draw proper inferences, and your appreciation of the finer shades of meaning. The ability to make such distinctions between two or more statements or inferences, all of which may appear to be valid, is the true mark of the discriminating reader. #### Part 4 – Information in the Natural Sciences This section covers your understanding of the information in the natural sciences subjects such as chemistry, biology, health, and safety. Knowledge of this section is mandatory for success in the healthcare field. #### Try a Science Sample Question Winning Tip for Science Questions There are no tricks in these questions. You either know the answer, have intuition for the correct answer, or you do not. Therefore, the best tip is: Study! Find a good textbook and make sure that you are informed in the required fields of knowledge. If you do not have enough time to study them top to bottom, find a tutorial exactly like the one offered by iPrep that reviews the essentials across-the-board. #### Part 5 – Vocational Adjustment Index This section of the PSB HOAE Test is practically a personality profiling test. This section includes statements relating to your self-image and circumstances relating to a future work environment. While this section is not a test, it should still be taken seriously. It is designed to take notice of your feelings, attitudes, and opinions about certain things and will be taken into account when choosing you for a role. Keep in mind that there are no correct or incorrect answers here. Relax, and answer honestly. Mark whether you agree or disagree with the statement and move on to the next one immediately. At the moment, iPrep’s preparation course does not cover this section of the test. #### Try a Vocational Adjustment Sample Question Winning Tip for Vocational Adjustment Questions Some statements may seem general, referring to your general personality and habits. Right? Wrong! You must never read and respond to the statements from a general perspective. This questionnaire assesses your psychological suitability to become a health occupation practitioner, and you must take this perspective while answering questions. Believe it or not, it makes a difference while taking this test. ## PSB HOAE Preparation Strategies ### Clear Ample Time for Preparation Nowadays, many pre-employment and admissions tests are short and provide a general overview of your mental skills. This is not the case with PSB tests. In order to do well on the first four sections of the test, and especially in the arithmetic and science sections, you must obtain a considerable corpus of knowledge and skills. If a few years have passed since you have last dealt with these topics, you will need ample time to regain your knowledge and confidence. Therefore, start studying at least one month in advance, and preferably even 2-3 months before test day. Like at the gym, your brain will process information and internalize new knowledge better and better over continual preparation sessions. ### Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses and Make a Study Plan Even if you start practicing way in advance, it would still be in your favor to quickly identify your strengths and weaknesses. Areas of weakness might undermine your total score, and to avoid that, you should spend more time preparing for them. This might mean reviewing natural science topics you are not familiar with, exceeding your reading pace, or learning how to avoid annoying spelling mistakes. Make a study plan that incorporates these observations. Spend at least twice as much time on areas of weakness but do not neglect your strong areas—it is important to review them, too, before the test in order to refresh your knowledge and sharpen your skills. ### Choose Your Preparation Course Wisely Your ultimate goal is to choose a preparation course that accurately covers the HOAE test subjects. You should look for a course that goes over all the different parts. Make sure that it’s one in which you can find genuine reviews telling that it was beneficial. Keep in mind the following aspects: 1. The course should offer PSB-specific test materials. Do not settle for a generic nursing or health occupations test practice materials as the format of the questions might be different. Practicing with the same format is essential for maintaining confidence upon taking the actual test and for test success. 2. The course should review all the relevant concepts and only those—you surely do not want to miss any topic you’ll be tested on but you also do not want to waste time practicing topics you don’t need to master. 3. Look for courses that were written by real people, that have real user reviews, and that offer customer support in case you need clarifications. Unfortunately, there is a considerable number of preparation courses for the PSB HOAE test that are merely a collection of practice materials from various sources. These courses are often not up to date. In addition, look for an online course or a book that was recently published by a familiar author. ### Find a Relevant and Focused Guide for the Natural Sciences Section If you think about the entire scope of knowledge you are required to know in the natural sciences section, you will realize that it is vast. If it has been a few years since you studied these materials, you may really lose your confidence. The solution is to find a guide that is broad enough to encompass the entire lot of knowledge required but focused and concise enough so you do not delve into unnecessary details. ### Learn How to Optimally Answer Multiple-Choice Problems All the questions of the HOAE test are multiple-choice. This means that you have a chance of 1 in 3/4/5 to get a question right. If you improve your skills in answering multiple-choice questions, you will directly increase your chances of success. This skill consists of acquiring methods of elimination and educated guesses as well as time-saving techniques in solving numerical problems. You should find a guide that includes these methods. You can be certain that the iPrep tutorials are well aware of this feature and offer solving tips and time-saving methods in answering multiple-choice questions. ### Practice Timed Simulations Reviewing all the required topics is the basis of your learning but a good preparation approach will be to test yourself on the accumulated knowledge. Look for preparation resources that most accurately simulate the actual Health Occupations Aptitude Test, which means taking a practice test that is as long and under the same time constraints as the real test. Undertaking such a PSB test simulation will ensure that you are not surprised on test day by the vast amount of questions and the severe time constraints. The familiarity alone is worth a couple of points on test day. That, coupled with practicing timed simulations, will surely help you improve this skill. ## Test Features ### PSB HOAE Test Fast Facts (tl;dr) • Total of 305 questions. • The test is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. • Five timed test sections: • Academic Aptitude (verbal, arithmetic, non-verbal) – 75 questions in 40 minutes • Spelling – 45 questions in 15 minutes • Reading comprehension – 35 questions in 35 minutes • Information in the Natural Sciences – 60 questions in 25 minutes • Vocational Adjustment Index – 90 questions in 15 minutes • The test may be taken once per year. • Calculators and cell phones are not permitted. • You must present a photo ID to take the test. Here are additional important features you should know about the PSB HOAE Test: ### Common Names of the PSB HOAE Test As the Health Occupations Aptitude Exam (HOAE) is the most common PSB test, people in forums may refer to it as various names. It is highly likely that a reference to any of the following names is relevant to you: • PSB Test / PSB Exam • HOAE Test / HOAE Exam • Health Occupations Aptitude Exam • HOAE PSB Test • PSB HOAE Test ### PSB Test Vs. HOAE Test You may wonder if there is a difference between the terms. Well, there is, but probably not for you. The Psychological Services Bureau (PSB) is the publisher of the Health Occupations Aptitude Exam (HOAE). The HOAE test is the most common PSB test, and if you are scheduled to take a PSB, you are most likely to take the HOAE exam. PSB publishes three main pre-admission tests. iPrep’s preparation course is tailored to the HOAE format but can prepare you for each of these tests as the topics overlap to a great extent: • Aptitude for Practical Nursing Examination (APNE) – very similar to the HOAE test. Includes a section that assesses judgment and comprehension in practical nursing situations instead of the reading comprehension section. • Registered Nursing School Aptitude Examination (RNSAE) – includes exactly the same sections as the HOAE but with a different number of questions in each section. • Health Occupations Aptitude Examination (HOAE) – the exam described on this page. ### Closed-Book Exam The PSB HOAE exam is a closed-book exam, in which you are not allowed to take any notes, books, or other reference material into the examination room, and you have to rely entirely on your knowledge and memory to answer the questions. In addition, no calculators, formula-sheets, and any electronic devices are permitted. ### Retake Restriction The PSB HOAE Test retake policy is determined by the college to which you are applying. In almost all cases, you cannot take the test more than once per academic year! In some cases you may only take it twice in a three-year period. Therefore, ample preparation is required. On the other hand, there are a few cases with less strict retake-policies, and either way, the highest score you achieve will be considered by the college. ### iPrep: Concise. Focused. What you need. Analytically Standardized Test The PSB HOAE test was established on the criterion related to predictive validity and reliability, which has been confirmed with the actual use of tests. It is also standardized by using a reliable sample of applicants for admission to a specific health program. Moreover, institutions also rely on it as the test serves as a dependable aid in successful student selection. ### 2. Easy Interpretation of Scores You get individual reports that consist of an easy-to-understand graphic portrayal of your suitability for healthcare education programs. It also provides you with a usable comparison listing of your test results. ### 3. Psychological Testing is Used The psychological testing serves as a tool to determine your unique potential for a specific program. It is used in the selection process to assist the institutions placing you where all the assets can be maximized. The positive use of these test results also leads to satisfying education, training, and work experience. ### Did you know? The PSB HOAE Test can only be taken once per academic year! ### 4. Results and Score If you opt for a computer-based test, your results will be available immediately, and a copy will be sent to the institution. However, the offline test is scored within 24 hours. ## Results Scale and Interpretations If you want a career in healthcare in the United States or Canada, you will need to pass the Health Occupations Aptitude Exam! Practice with simulated tests well in advance so you can increase your chances of getting into the program you want! What is considered a good/passing score? That depends on the college/program you apply for. There is no passing score. Scores are used for ranking you among the other applicants: The better your score, the higher your ranking is. To provide some indication, though, total points possible in the PSB HOAE is 380. The average PSB scores depend on the program you apply for as scores are normalized per profession. For example, the average score for surgical technicians is 240, radiography is 255, and dental hygienists is 270. It is recommended to contact the registrar of your program to understand what your target score is. Average PSB score is 277 (Dental Hygienists). Source: Melissa Gail Efurd, dissertation Colleges usually get the test results and applicant reports within 24 hours; however, in most cases you will only be able to know your own score after two weeks. The test results for the Health Occupations Aptitude Examination are marked in two ways: 1. Raw Scores 2. Percentile Points Each raw score shows the number of questions that you have answered correctly in one section. For example, if the reading comprehension section consists of 35 questions, and you have answered 20, your raw score will be 20. Later on, the raw scores will be transformed into a percentile. The percentile points decide the rank that you have earned in the examination. For example, in the report below, the same raw score in the arithmetic and non-verbal sections is converted into a very different percentile score. The scores earned in the Academic Aptitude Test consists of the scores earned on each of the subtests. However, your percentile in this section is done from the separate distribution of raw scores. Further, there are lines on your profile chart that provide you a graphic record of the percentile you have earned in all five sections and three subsets. For the verbal subset, you will get a rating from “very low” to “superior” in the left margin. The percentile scores of all test sections are then combined into a final score, which is used for your assessment. For example, in the test report below, a student is ranked rather low for the non-verbal section (percentile 54) and very high for reading comprehension (percentile 94). The total score is 299, which is way above average. To assess the performance in this Health Occupations Aptitude Exam, you will have to consider results from all the five tests and three subsets. Your results and overall percentile showcase your strengths and weaknesses in each part. The scores are then compared with those of other applicants, and the eligible ones are selected for the health occupation program. Note: There are many factors that affect your acceptance or rejection from a specific health care program. Test scores are just one of them. ## PSB HOAE FAQs What is the PSB HOAE Test? CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

I am so grateful and happy about IPREP. I’ve been trying for years to pass my entry exam for the LPN program. This particular school required the PSB exam, this was my second try and I passed and got in the program! IPREP definitely helped me where I fell short on my previous exam. I bought about 4 practice books off Amazon and didn’t pass. I came across IPREP while browsing the internet, your review sold me along with the practice questions. It mimics the PSB exam to the tea. Your study program that I purchased was the best thing I could have done. Not only did I pass, but I also have access to your product in case I need to go back and refresh my brains. I thank you so much and will most definitely recommend IPREP to all my medical friends and classmates. 🤗👍👍

Do not buy, gives you a false sense of confidence. Go with another site or anything else. I used this as my main study guide and it made me extremely confident going into the exams but there is a massive disconnect between this and the exam.

I am so grateful and happy about IPREP. I’ve been trying for years to pass my entry exam for the LPN program. This particular school required the PSB exam, this was my second try and I passed and got in the program ! IPREP definitely helped me where I fell short on my previous exam .I bout about 4 practice books off Amazon and didn’t pass. I came across IPREP while browsing the internet, your review sold me along with the practice questions. It mimics the PSB exam to the tea. With your study program that I purchased was the best thing I could have done. Not only did I pass, I also have access to your product in case I need to go back and refresh my brains. I thank you so much and will most definitely recommend IPREP to all my medical friends and classmates. 🤗👍👍

Iprep’s PSB Health Occupations Aptitude Examination prep course was helpful in giving its user a idea about what a HOAE is like and it gives you a general idea of what the HOAE is about and what it will ask of you. Something important to note though, is the prep only gives you a general idea, your HOAE could give you totally different questions than the ones you learn about in this course. What this course does is it gives you a GENERAL summary of Science, Spelling, and Math, etc…to help you prepare. It does not give you the answers.
